The Catholic Relief Services Myanmar program is based on the management model that has proven highly successful in countries like Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. CRS Myanmar maintains a small administrative footprint while leveraging the expertise and reach of local partners to focus attention on areas of mutual importance where objectives of communities, Church partners, and CRS intersect. Country Manager Mehul Savla, who resides in Yangon, manages CRS/Myanmar. Program Manager Christopher Bodington assists in areas of partnership, capacity building and programming. CRS Myanmar currently shares office space in Yangon with Caritas Thailand. CRS has been engaged in Myanmar for more than a decade with programs on justice and peace, livelihoods and emergency response, including Cyclone Nargis in 2008.

As civil society broadens in Myanmar, CRS works with local partners to incorporate international best practices of community-led project design and implementation. CRS takes a collaborative approach to partnership management, which focuses on mutual capacity building at all levels and as much hands-on coaching as possible throughout the project cycle. Current priority areas for programming include inclusive education for children with disabilities, mine risk education, agriculture/livelihoods, and emergency response. Current ongoing projects are in areas of

  1. Emergency Response
  2. Livelihoods
  3. Networking and Education for Catholic HIV and AIDS organizations
  4. justice and peace projects
  5. mine risk education and victim assistance
