Eritrea
Situated on the Red Sea, Eritrea is a diverse country of nine ethnic groups. Many Eritreans pride themselves on self-reliance and resourcefulness, particularly after their long fight for independence. Most are subsistence farmers and herders. Unfortunately, recurrent drought often leaves farmers struggling to grow sufficient food. A border dispute with Ethiopia also remains unsolved, with more than 200,000 troops amassed and threatening another round of fighting.
Catholic Relief Services has supported projects in Eritrea since 1958. With recent water shortages resulting from insufficient rainfall, CRS has focused efforts on water and sanitation activities in drought-affected communities. Working with the government of Eritrea and participating communities, CRS' water and sanitation projects have helped more than 35,000 Eritreans gain access to clean water.
The CRS Eritrea office is located in Eritrea's capital of Asmara. CRS employs 1 international and 26 national staff members in Eritrea.
