Earthquake in Nepal

April’s massive earthquake in Nepal leveled more than 500,000 homes and claimed 8,669 lives. Despite treacherous topography and unpredictable weather, CRS continues to provide lifesaving support in some of the most-affected, hard-to-reach parts of the country.

Shelter remains an urgent priority, as many families still live under basic tarps, tin sheeting or other materials, with minimal protection from the elements.

CRS Response

CRS has provided critical shelter materials, living supplies, and water treatment and hygiene kits to more than 100,000 people. With Caritas Nepal, CRS is focusing on the hard-hit districts of Gorkha, Lamjung and Dhading. We’ve provided:

  • Relief materials and shelter supplies—tarps and blankets—to 12,495 families, or 62,475 people
  • Transitional shelter supplies—corrugated galvanized iron sheeting and toolkits—to 2,286 families
  • Cash grants to almost 8,000 families to use for purchasing shelter materials
  • Trauma healing for communities through theater group presentations at distribution sites
  • Market support to 179 vendors whose shops were destroyed

Long-term recovery efforts will likely focus on safe rebuilding, support so families can become resilient, and the restoration of markets and livelihoods.
