Southern Sudan at the Polls

Every reasonable assessment predicted southern Sudan's referendum would include at least some election-related violence. Instead, southern Sudanese voters displayed patience in long lines. They approached the day with solemnity and a sense of purpose. And the vote proceeded peacefully.
